Show the children a picture of a rainbow. Invite the children to name the colors they see: red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple. Survey the children to find out each child's favorite color. Create a colorful graph to show the results. |
Make a tissue paper rainbow mural. First, draw the rainbow outline with six segments on a large sheet of paper. Label each segment with a color. Hang the paper on a wall. Cut sheets of colored tissue paper into squares. Invite the children to work in small groups to glue each color onto the appropriate band of the rainbow. |
Read fiction and non-fiction books about colors or rainbows. Consider such titles as: Good Night, Sweet Butterflies: A Color Dreamland by Dawn Bentley, Red Is a Dragon by Roseanne Thong, Duckie's Rainbow by Frances Barry and Ned's Rainbow by Melanie Walsh. |
Give the children one container of paint for each primary color: red, yellow and blue. Provide several empty containers for mixing the paint. Assist the children as they combine colors to create green, orange and purple. Invite the children to create two more colors on their own. |
